How does knowing the causes of transpiration benefit society?

I'm thinking something like it would help farmers people in agriculture to figure out how to better the crop production. But I need a strong answer.

PLEASE give me a source and a strong reason why it benefits society.Research would be good...cough. An example too. haha. How does knowing the causes of transpiration benefit society?
Transpiration is a necessary part of plant life and thus understanding it and associated disorders or inefficiencies with plants (such as photorespiration) can surely improve scientists in a myriad of ways. For example, when one understands photorespiration, one may take measures to reduce it, such as ensuring the plant receives proper carbon dioxide amounts (as opposed to oxygen concentration).

Similarly, if transpiration is messed up somehow in a plant, we can look at the mechanism by which transpiration works and experiment by manipulating each step in the pathway to determine what has gone wrong. This can only be done if we understand transpiration.
