If you know how to do counted cross stitch, and you stitch the body of your scarf in stockinette stitch, you can treat it as if it were a canvas and ';embroider'; the name on it after you've finished knitting.

However, a scarf knitted solely in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) has a bad tendency to curl in on itself. You need to have a border (a couple of rows at each end and a couple of stitches at the beginning and end of each row) of garter stitch or seed stitch to help keep it from curling.

And when you do your embroidery, you have to be extra careful with the back side of your work as it will also show.

Putting the name in while knitting requires being able to work in more than one color at a time, and that's not for beginners. How to add a name to a knitted scarf?
You can use a method called 'swiss darning' which is done after knitting your scarf. This is fiddly to describe but very easy to do. A book from the library will have instructions and pictures. Google will probably come up with pics too. Knit the scarf twice as wide as required and after swiss darning fold it lengthwise and stitch to form a tube. This will hide the ends etc. and make the scarf warmer with more body.
